What is Telerehab?
Telerehab is the delivery of physiotherapy services using video conferencing technology or by telephone. Telerehab is just another way of saying video sessions, online sessions or telephone consults. It is much like using FaceTime or WhatsApp. The difference is that as health care providers, it is essential that the platform we use is secure and confidential. Telerehab is a particularly useful tool when it is not possible to see your physiotherapist in person, such as right now during the Covid-19 pandemic.
What are the advantages of Telerehab sessions?
Some advantages of video physiotherapy sessions are:
· You can be assessed and begin physiotherapy care
· We can help monitor and progress your home exercise program
· We can see how you move and function in your own home
· You can continue your rehab until our clinic re-opens
· You get to see the smiling face of your Action Potential Rehabilitation therapist!
Is Telerehab a valid intervention that will help me to improve?
While Telerehab can not completely replace all aspects of in-person care, research has shown that it is a valid and reliable way of delivering physiotherapy care. In these extraordinary times, it is a way to begin or continue your physiotherapy treatment plan until we are able to see you again in person. You can expect the same caring, effective quality of care that we are always committed to deliver.
How do the online sessions work?
Our online platform is very easy to use. We schedule your appointment and email you a secure link. All you have to do is click on “Join now” in that email and a video window will pop open.
How do I know if I have the right technology?
You can use a desk-top, laptop or tablet. A smart phone can be used but it is less ideal because the screen is much smaller and it would be harder for you and your therapist to see each other. Before you start your Telerehab sessions with us, we’ll schedule a free setup appointment so we can test your technology and the placement of your device to try to make sure that there are no glitches.
The ideal Telerehab setting is a quiet room that has sufficient space to move around. You will need a stable chair that you can place against a wall. Though not essential, if you have equipment exercise equipment such as stability ball or elastic exercise bands, it may be helpful to have them nearby.
How do I know my privacy will be ensured?
We have taken our time to find an online platform that complies with Canadian privacy and online security laws (HIPAA and PIPEDA). You can be confident the video platform we have chosen, which is called Embodia, will keep all your information private and secure.
How do I give you my consent?
Before you begin the Telerehab sessions with us, you will be asked to read a consent form and click your consent. Your physiotherapist will ensure that any questions that you may have will be answered prior to this. Ongoing consent during your treatments will occur in the same way as for an in person session.
How do I know if online sessions are right for me?
We are using Telerehab to consult, assess, treat, and monitor our clients. Everyone’s needs are different, and so we would be very happy to talk to you about your unique needs. Some things we would discuss together are: whether you would need physical support during the session and would it be possible for another person to be present to help you if needed. Your safety is very important to us.
Please note you must be a resident of Ontario at the time of the Telerehab session.
Are physiotherapy sessions via Telerehab covered by my insurance?
Most insurance companies have agreed to cover physiotherapy sessions via telerehab. We would encourage you to call your provider to confirm that they do cover physiotherapy telerehab sessions.
