Group Fitness Program for Clients with Special Needs
Action Potential Rehabilitation therapists run a Physiotherapy Supervised Exercise Program for the Aphasia Centre of Ottawa. This program is suitable for any person who has an acquired brain injury. The client does not have to have a communication disorder to participate in the class. However should a participant have a communication disorder such as aphasia, the necessary support is always available.
Each potential participant meets with the physiotherapist and exercise therapist prior to beginning in the class for an intake assessment and to make sure that the class would meet their needs. Classes run twice a week in 8 week blocks and participants can chose to come once or twice a week. The goal of the program is to provide a safe and supportive environment for clients to maintain and improve their cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility and function.
Classes are held in a small comfortably equipped gym that has treadmills, a recumbent bike, universal weight machine and other equipment. During classes each client works on their own individualized program and goals with the help and guidance of our therapists. The client to therapist ratio is purposely kept low (1:2) with a maximum of 4 participants per class to ensure adequate support and attention.
