Acupuncture and Dry Needling

Acupuncture is the stimulation of areas on the surface of the body via the insertion of thin needles. The purpose of anatomical acupuncture is to prevent or modify the perception of pain and is thus a form of pain control.

In addition, it can help reduce swelling and increase the range of motion in your affected muscles and/or joints to improve the overall function of these areas. Unlike traditional Chinese acupuncture, anatomical acupuncture is not used for the prevention and treatment of systemic illness.

To reduce the possibility of infection from acupuncture, all needles are sterile one-time-use needles.  They are disposed as medical waste following each treatment.

Potential benefits: Acupuncture may provide relief of your symptoms without the need for drugs, and improve the balance of bodily energies, leading to improved function of affected areas of the body.

Potential risks: Slight pain, discomfort, and bruising at the site of needle insertion are the most common side effects.  Rarely, you might experience fainting, nausea, and/or the aggravation of pre-existing problematic systems.
*You should notify the physiotherapist administering the acupuncture if you experience any of the above-mentioned side effects.  You should disclose whether you are pregnant. You should also mention to your therapist if you have any anxiety about needles, or if you have previously fainted during a medical procedure involving needles.
