Action Pawtential Rehabilitation

What is canine rehab and why might your dog need it?

If your pet sustains an injury, develops a condition, or has reduced mobility as they age, canine rehab will help. A Physiotherapist trained specifically in canine rehab will look at your dog’s movement, joints and muscles to identify the problem. Education, exercise, manual therapy and modalities will be used to target your pet’s specific recovery needs.

Scenario: Your pet may sustain a “weekend warrior” injury, in that they are sedentary all week while their owner is at work. Then, on the weekend, they go to play at the park. A muscle injury can occur from running too fast when the body is not warmed up. Alternatively, a ligament injury can occur when running, pivoting or decelerating on an uneven surface, leading to pain and limping.
Scenario: Your dog’s limping or pain may come on gradually from repetitive strain injury caused by jumping on and off the couch or in and out of the car. This can lead to front limb injuries or spinal disc injuries.

Canine rehab is meant to work together with your veterinarian. Your pet’s rehab team should include the owner, the physio and the vet to ensure the best care.

Begin your dog’s rehab with an initial assessment and then help your dog work hard during and between follow-up visits to give them the best quality of life.
