Paediatric Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
Pelvic health physiotherapy, also referred to as pelvic floor physiotherapy, provides the assessment and treatment of a variety of conditions in which the muscles of the pelvic floor play an important role. These conditions are wide-ranging and can occur across all ages and genders. A few of the most common conditions that can benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy include:
• Low-back, pelvic, or hip pain (for example from a fall on the tailbone)
• Urinary incontinence (urine leaks with giggles, coughs, or while playing);
• Urine leaks while on the way to the bathroom;
• Chronic constipation or difficulty voiding;
• Fecal incontinence (stool leaks or staining of the underwear);
• Overactive bladder;
• Painful scars in the pelvic region, such as those associated with surgery;
• Diastasis recti abdominis;
• Bedwetting
The assessment begins with a thorough interview to see what factors are affecting your child’s health because body, mind and spirit are interconnected. In our assessment we will look at the child’s bladder and bowel routines, their body awareness, their diet and liquid intake, overall development as well as their stress and emotional regulation. Internal exams are not part of this assessment. The perineum (external genitalia) may be observed but this will not be on the first visit and only with parent and child’s consent.
This website provides general information about our services and conditions treated. It is not intended to be used for self-assessment or treatment, and is not a substitute for an individualized treatment plan developed by a registered physiotherapist.
